PROJECT: VISIT BODRUM

I was tasked on creating a small scale website that showcased a city/town to drive interest in tourism. However, I couldn’t just make a site based on the town itself, that would be boring. I needed to lure people in with something that they’d least expect.

I really enjoyed this project because I love traveling and thinking of the places I have yet to see. One of those places is the town of Bodrum in Turkey.

THE LOGO

A big symbol that can be seen all across Turkey is the nazar, or as most people know it as, the “evil eye”. The belief is that the nazar protects you from those who wish harm upon you. They are said to crack when they have done their job.

I wanted to honor this part of their culture by including it as the focal point of the town’s brand. A nazar is typically blue, so it worked out perfect the sense that I was able to use the complimentary color of the original. I wanted to logo to be a “mandarin nazar” and I’d like to think it worked out.

THE HISTORY

Bodrum is a town nestled on the Aegean coastline. It’s a lovely little coastal town that has tons to do and has a boat culture that many visitors love to be part of. What most people don’t know about this town is that their climate is perfect for growing mandarins. In addition to their mandarin groves, they also grow the satsuma which is an immature orange that is very popular in Japan.

When most people think of the Aegean or Mediterranean destinations, they usually pick Greek destinations. A fact that to keep in mind the next time you’re planning a vacation (or holiday if you’re anywhere else in the world) is that you can get a similar experience to these Greek Islands at a cheaper cost in Bodrum.

THE SITE

Creating a website of course meant that I had to optimize the site for mobile. My thought was to organize the content in a way that made the site easy and quick to go through. I didn’t want to bog anyone down with a lot of copy and have them stare at their phone for too long trying to read tiny body copy. The goal is to peak their interest just enough to get them to contact the site via the contact section and then recommend things to do and places to stay. I wanted to drive not only an interest just in the place itself, but the experience of smelling the citrus in the air as the breeze blows by on the coast.
